How I Nearly Withdrew from 2023 Presidential Race — President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu disclosed that he almost withdrew from the 2023 presidential race due to overwhelming challenges but was persuaded to stay by former Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari.
Tinubu shared this revelation at a special Iftar at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he thanked guests for their support and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
Reflecting on a difficult campaign moment, Tinubu recounted an encounter with a relative who blamed him for the naira scarcity at the time. The relative claimed people were s¥ffering due to his candidacy and doubted his chances of winning. Tinubu admitted that the conversation made him consider quitting but ultimately reaffirmed his resolve.
Masari and other allies encouraged him to stay in the race, assuring him of their backing. “When I came to Abuja, Masari told me, ‘I am the Chairman of the North West Group; don’t look back,’” Tinubu recalled.
The President acknowledged the tough economic landscape he inherited and the difficult choices he had to make, including the removal of fuel subsidies on his first day in office. “I knew it was the right thing to do for our nation’s future,” he said.
Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Tinubu’s bold leadership, stating that his decisions have tackled long-standing issues such as fuel subsidy fraud and forex instability. Senate President Godswill Akpabio described Tinubu as the most audacious leader in Nigeria’s history, while other dignitaries, including governors and ministers, lauded his vision and resilience.
The event also featured prayers led by the Imam of the National Mosque, seeking divine guidance for Tinubu and Nigeria’s progress.
