Nigeria’s public universities may soon face fresh disruptions, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) intensifies protests across its branches in preparation for a possible nationwide strike.
Reliable sources within the union told our correspondent on Wednesday night that the ongoing demonstrations are a prelude to industrial action that could end more than two years of uninterrupted academic activities.
A member of ASUU’s National Executive Committee (NEC), who also leads a branch in the North West, disclosed that a NEC meeting would be convened shortly to take a final decision on the strike.
“We are still mobilising. The government has been given enough time, yet nothing has changed. The National President will call for a NEC meeting any moment from now, and I can confirm that strike is on the table,” the official stated, while faulting the Tinubu administration for what he described as a lack of seriousness in addressing lecturers’ welfare.
