LAWMA Clarifies Street Sweepers’ Wages Following Viral Video
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has responded to a viral video claiming that street sweepers are underpaid and not receiving the promised minimum wage.
In the video, a sweeper alleged they were earning only ₦30,000, with a recent increase to ₦40,000 in February—far below the ₦85,000 mentioned.
The video sparked public debate.
LAWMA, in a statement shared by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s aide, Jibril Gawat, addressed the issue, clarifying that street sweepers are employed through private contractors responsible for their salaries.
According to LAWMA, a recent wage review set the minimum salary for sweepers at ₦40,000 and supervisors at ₦50,000, based on a structured four-hour daily shift.
The agency emphasized that the wage increase aims to provide financial stability while allowing workers the flexibility to pursue other income opportunities.
LAWMA also highlighted several initiatives to improve worker welfare, including: Regular health and safety training, Reclassification of sweeping routes for better security, Accident and emergency insurance, Provision of uniforms and work tools.
LAWMA reassured the public that any salary discrepancies or contract violations would be investigated and resolved. They reiterated their commitment to fair treatment and improving working conditions for street sweepers.
