Akwa Ibom Governor Gifts Youths N310m for Boycotting #EndBadGovernance Protest

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has announced a cash reward of N310 million to the youth leadership across the state’s 31 local government areas for boycotting the recent #EndBadGovernance protest.

The governor made the announcement during a thank-you rally held at Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. Prior to the nationwide protest, which took place from August 1 to 10, the governor addressed key stakeholders, including youth groups, students, and market associations, urging them not to participate.

During the rally, the governor stated that each of the 31 local governments would receive N10 million, with the money to be distributed across party lines.

“The leadership of the youths in each LGA will receive the money and distribute it across party lines,” the governor said.

“We cannot leave you in the same state we found you. We are pleased that you heeded our plea not to join the protest—not because we don’t believe in protests or are indifferent to the current issues. We understand that peaceful protests can sometimes be hijacked by individuals looking to damage government facilities and infrastructure.

“Our leaders have worked diligently for the past 37 years to build this infrastructure, and a moment of anger can destroy all this hard work. We are not ashamed to commend your efforts, and we are here to express our gratitude. Although you did not protest, we heard your concerns loud and clear. We understand the issues you are facing, including hunger, unemployment, and the high cost of food. We will do our best to address these issues within the resources available in our state.”
