LASTMA Warns Motorists: Eating, Drinking, or Smoking While Driving Could Lead to Jail Time
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to drivers, stating that eating, drinking, or smoking while behind the wheel is a punishable offense under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, the agency emphasized that such actions constitute distracted driving, which poses significant risks to road safety.
“Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence according to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018,” the statement read.
LASTMA clarified that violators could face serious consequences, including vehicle impoundment, up to three months’ imprisonment, or six months of community service—depending on the severity of the case and the court’s judgment.
The agency reiterated that the law is designed to minimize road accidents by curbing all forms of distraction while driving.
This reminder comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of traffic-related incidents across Lagos State.
