NiMet Issues Three-Day Heavy Rainfall Warning for Southern States, Warns Against Flash Flooding
Residents of Ogun, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom should prepare for heavy rainfall over the next three days, according to a forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
In its latest bulletin, NiMet also predicted light to moderate rainfall in Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Abia, and several other states. The agency warned that areas expecting moderate to heavy rainfall may experience flash flooding.
NiMet cautioned that the rains may be accompanied by strong winds, which could pose risks to weak structures, trees, and masts. The public is advised to avoid driving through floodwaters due to the danger of strong undercurrents.
Additionally, the agency recommended that residents disconnect electrical appliances before the rains begin to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.
Other potential dangers highlighted include slippery roads and reduced visibility during downpours—both of which could severely disrupt road traffic.
NiMet urged the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions as the rainy conditions persist.
