Cameroon’s 92-Year-Old President Biya Poised for Re-election After Four Decades in Office

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest head of state, turns 92 amid speculation about his candidacy for another term in the October election.

In power since 1982, Biya has yet to confirm his intentions, but many—including a divided opposition—expect him to run.

Following the contested 2018 election, Biya tightened his grip on power, with dissent met by arrests and repression, according to human rights activists. Government spokesman Rene Emmanuel Sadi recently stated that Biya will announce his decision “at the appropriate time.”

Despite ongoing concerns about his health and long absences abroad, calls for his reelection continue from various groups, including traditional leaders and supporters on social media.

Critics highlight widespread corruption, unemployment, and ongoing violence, including attacks by Boko Haram and conflicts with separatist groups. Catholic bishops have warned of growing distress among Cameroonians. Yet, in his latest speech, Biya praised the country’s progress and urged young people to reject instability.

His government remains largely unchanged since 2019, with several ministerial and parliamentary seats still unfilled after deaths. Whether Biya officially declares his candidacy or not, his continued rule seems all but assured.
