A young man, identified as Stephen Jiya, has been sentenced to d£ath by h@nging in Niger State for ro@§ting his mother, Comfort Jiya, to d£ath.
The State’s Chief Judge, Justice Halima Abdulmalik, in his judgement said Stephen was guilty of culpable hom+cide, p¥nishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law, which attracts the d£ath penalty.
Stephen was arraigned by the Office of the Attorney General of the Niger State Ministry of Justice for the m¥rder of his mother, a retired director in the State Ministry of Education, in December 2021.
The deceased, a former Principal of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Sabon Wuse and Maryam Babangida Girls’ Science College, Minna, di£d after she was set abl@ze by Stephen on Monday December 20, 2021.
In her ruling, the judge said the prosecution has proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt.
“The prosecutor has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the defendant, and I hereby find you, Stephen Jiya, guilty of the offence of culpable hom+cide, which is contrary to Section 221 of the penal code.
In the circumstances, the sentence of the court upon you is that you should be h@nged by the neck, el£ctro¥ted, exec¥ted, or inj£cted with lethal inj£ction until you are d£ad, and may the Lord have mercy on your soul,” she said.
