NLC and TUC to embark on a nationwide strike over att@ck on Ajaero

The organised labour unions, comprising the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, have vowed to embark on a nationwide strike over the att@ck on NLC President, Joe Ajaero.

The leaders of the unions made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja, on Friday, November 3.

It would be recalled that the NLC President was reportedly arrested and br¥talized during the organised labour protest in Imo State on Wednesday, November 1.

In a 6-point demand to the Federal Government, the unions said: “The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, should not only be investigated and redeployed but should also be held accountable for his action on Ajaero.

The Area Commander and the other officers who supervised the br¥talisation of our President and other workers in Owerri should be relieved of their office and stripped of their commission.

Mr Nwaneri Chinasa, Adviser on Special Duties who supervised the t£rror on workers and br¥tality meted out to Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, be arrested immediately and prosecuted for his crimes against workers and the President.

We demand an unbiased and thorough examination of the President on the physical and psychological inj¥ries inflicted on him. And all the properties lost be restored immediately.”

They stressed that if the government fails to meet their demands, the NUC, TUC, and their affiliates will no longer guarantee peace in the country, as there will be nationwide protests.

The nationwide strike is to commence on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.
