All 18 occupants of a Toyota bus were k#lled and b¥rnt beyond recognition on Saturday when the bus had a head-on collision with a Mercedes truck on the Port Harcourt-Enugu Highway.
Eyewitnesses report that the tipper with registration number AAA 285 XTR, which was loaded with bags of cement had a head-on collision with the bus (registration number NKE 622 XA) which was loaded with passengers.
According to preliminary investigation, the tipper drove against traffic from Enugu City and then hit the bus which was coming from Aba in Abia State, leading to both vehicles bursting into fl@m£s with all passengers b¥rnt beyond recognition, except the tipper driver who was rushed to the hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
According to a statement on Sunday by the spokesman of the FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, “The victims have been given mass burial. All obstructions have been cleared. Enugu State Fire Service already extinguished the fir£ on the bus. The fatal crash is blameable on several factors, including fatigue, which must have made one of the drivers sleep on the wheels,” he stated.
Meanwhile.the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani bemoaned the incident especially in this Easter season, when Christians are commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He ordered full-scale investigation into the incident, including obtaining the identities of the deceased victims and their relatives.
