Sowore Receives Treatment After Police Att+ck at Kuje Court — Lawyer
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been treated for inj¥ries sustained during a v+olent att+ck by policemen at the Kuje court premises on Friday.
According to his lawyer, Tope Temokun, Sowore was attended to at the Kuje Custodial Centre clinic and given anti-tetanus medication. “I returned from Kuje prison just now, and Omoyele Sowore was fine after being treated yesterday at the clinic there,” Temokun said in a statement on Saturday.
Temokun condemned the police for denying Sowore’s re-arrest, questioning whether court orders “still have any meaning to the police in Nigeria.” He described the incident as a serious thr+at to the rule of law, saying, “The matter is not just about Sowore but about the potency of our law.”
Narrating the incident, Temokun explained that Sowore had been granted bail and was meeting the conditions when policemen, who had laid siege to the court, stormed the premises and abd¥cted him again. “Are people safe again in this country, even around the court?” he asked.
The lawyer criticised police authorities for attempting to justify the incident, calling it “an+rchy in uniform.” He said Sowore was first arrested on Thursday at the Federal High Court but later taken to Kuje after public outrage. The prison authorities initially rejected him for lack of proper documentation, forcing the police to seek justification for their actions.
Temokun stressed that once bail is granted, the court—not the police—directs the process, urging law enforcement agencies to respect due process. “From that moment, custodial power shifts fully to the court and the Correctional Service,” he stated.
He called on the police to study Chapter IV of the Constitution, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, insisting, “We refuse to bow!”
