Uoma Beauty Founder Sharon Chuter Passes on at 38
Sharon Chuter, the visionary force behind the inclusive cosmetics brand Uoma Beauty, has d+ed at the age of 38.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed her passing on August 14.
Her representatives also verified the news to The Business of Beauty, following an initial report from Kirbie Johnson’s Ahead of the Kirb newsletter.
Chuter founded Uoma Beauty in 2019, building the brand around a mission of diversity and representation. Its foundation line offered more than 50 shades and was stocked in major retailers including Selfridges in the UK and Ulta Beauty in the US.
She also became a leading advocate for change in the beauty industry, launching the “Pull Up or Sh+t Up” campaign in 2020. The initiative urged companies to disclose the number of Black employees on their payrolls, a push for transparency that gained global attention in the wake of George Floyd’s m¥rder.
In 2023, Uoma’s assets were acquired by MacArthur Beauty and BrainTrust. Earlier this year, Chuter sued both firms, alleging the sale had been unauthorized and significantly undervalued.
