FG Considers Salary Increase for Politicians, Says Current Earnings are Inadequate and Outdated

The Federal Government, through the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), has signaled plans to review the salaries of political office holders, describing their current earnings as inadequate and outdated.

RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, disclosed in Abuja on Monday that President Bola Tinubu currently earns N1.5 million monthly, while ministers receive less than N1 million — figures unchanged since 2008.

“You are paying the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria N1.5 million a month, with a population of over 200 million people. Everybody believes it is a joke,” Shehu said, adding that heads of some agencies earn far more than ministers and even the Attorney-General.

He clarified that the commission’s mandate covers only political, judicial, and legislative office holders, not civil servants, stressing that fair remuneration was necessary to match their responsibilities.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) rejected the proposal, arguing that it overlooks the growing inequality in the country and the hidden perks already enjoyed by politicians.
