Popular Ghanaian actor Mawuli Gavor has shared the pivotal moment that led him to abandon his corporate career at global accounting firm KPMG for the entertainment industry.
During a recent interview, Gavor recounted how he initially struggled to balance his demanding job at KPMG with his budding acting career, particularly while working on projects with beverage brand Martini.
“I was making 770 cedis a month at KPMG,” Gavor revealed, describing the challenges of juggling both commitments. He explained how film shoots would start as early as 6 AM, with crew members arriving late around 11 AM, causing him to frequently arrive late to his 8 AM corporate job.
The turning point came when Gavor decided to quit the entertainment projects to focus on his stable KPMG position. However, when he informed the Martini team of his decision, they asked about his annual salary at the accounting firm.
“They looked at me and said, ‘If this is the case, we’ll give that to you today,’” Gavor recalled. The production team offered to pay him his entire year’s KPMG salary in a single day as compensation for one project.
Faced with this unexpected opportunity, Gavor made a practical decision that would change his career trajectory. He immediately returned to his office and submitted his resignation letter to HR.
“If somebody gave you your one-year salary in one day, not even one month, but one day…” he reflected, explaining why he has never looked back at corporate life.
Gavor emphasized that the creative economy offers not just comparable income potential, but significant time savings. He noted that he can now earn the same amount of money working 30 minutes that would have previously required a full 9-to-5 workday at KPMG.
