Pres. Tinubu to Depart Nigeria for Visit Japan and Brazil on Diplomatic Mission

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a diplomatic trip to Japan and Brazil, with a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

According to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will first travel to Japan to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama from August 20 to 22.

Themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 will address Africa’s economic transformation, institutional reforms, and business climate improvements through private investment and innovation. It will also promote a resilient, sustainable African society rooted in human security, peace, and stability.

Beyond plenary sessions, Tinubu will hold bilateral talks and meet with chief executives of Japanese firms investing in Nigeria. Established in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the UN, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, TICAD is held every three years in either Japan or Africa—the last edition took place in Tunisia in 2022.

From Japan, the president will proceed to Brasilia, Brazil’s capital, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In Brazil, Tinubu will engage in bilateral discussions, attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, and lead a delegation of ministers and senior officials to negotiate agreements and Memoranda of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two nations.
