Trump Says Pardon for Diddy Harder Because He Was Hostile During Campaign
Former U.S. President Donald Trump says he sees Sean “Diddy” Combs as “sort of half-innocent” despite the music mogul’s recent conviction—but suggested that granting him a pardon is complicated by the rapper’s past public criticisms.
Speaking on Newsmax Friday night, Trump addressed Combs’ July 2 federal conviction on two counts of transporting individuals to engage in pr+stit¥tion—charges that carry up to 10 years each. Combs was, however, acquitted of more severe s+x tr+fficking and rack£teering conspiracy charges.
“He was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,” Trump told Newsmax host Rob Finnerty. “He was celebrating a victory, but I guess it wasn’t as good of a victory.”
Reports have circulated that Trump, known for issuing high-profile pardons—often to political allies—has considered pardoning Combs, once a former acquaintance and fellow public figure. But Combs’ past remarks about Trump appear to be a sticking point.
“When I ran for office, he was very hostile,” Trump said. “It’s hard, you know? We’re human beings. And we don’t like to have things cloud our judgment… but he made some t+rrible statements.”
In 2017, Combs told The Daily Beast he didn’t “really give a f*** about Trump.” By 2020, during Trump’s failed re-election bid, the Bad Boy Records boss called for Trump to be “b+nished,” telling Charlamagne tha God that “white men like Trump” were the problem. “The number one priority is to get Trump out of office,” he said at the time.
Trump referenced those sentiments in his Friday comments, saying: “So I don’t know… It makes it more difficult to do.”
Combs is currently housed at New York’s only federal detention center and has requested release on a $50 million bond ahead of his October 3 sentencing.
