“You Can’t Be Feasting While Telling People to Fast” — Peter Obi Speaks on Excessive Government Spending
Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again taken aim at wasteful government spending, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and accountability in public service.
Speaking at a recent engagement, Obi recounted a personal decision he made while serving as governor of Anambra State — the abolition of the Office of the First Lady, a move he said was driven by principle and a desire to reduce the cost of governance.
“We had an Office of the First Lady — it was getting more money than some of our ministries,” he revealed. “I shut it down because nobody voted for my wife. It is me they voted for. And both of us live in the house. I love her, she is my best friend. I shut them down so that will cut cost of governance.”
Obi, known for his frugal approach to governance, stressed the contradiction of leaders indulging in extravagance while citizens are being urged to make sacrifices. “You can’t be feasting while telling people to fast,” he said pointedly.
