Ijora Bridge to Fully Close April 27 for Critical Repairs — FG

The Federal Government has announced the full closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos beginning April 27, 2025, to carry out urgent structural repairs.

According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the closure is necessary to replace worn-out bearings beneath the bridge deck—components that support the structure and absorb movement.

The deteriorating bearings have led to increasing vibrations, raising safety concerns.

Though the bridge is not in immediate danger of collapse, Kesha stressed that the repairs are essential to prevent further damage. About 50 bearings will be replaced in this final phase of a multi-year rehabilitation project—the first major overhaul since the bridge was built.

“This phase will involve lifting the entire deck to replace the faulty bearings. We understand the inconvenience, but this work is crucial for public safety,” she said during an inspection on Monday.

The Ijora Bridge is a vital link between the Ijora Causeway and the busy Apapa port area. Authorities say traffic management plans are in place to ease disruptions during the closure.
