Lagos State Shuts Down 13 Markets for Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Government has shut down 13 markets for violating the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

The decision follows repeated offenses related to improper waste disposal on roads, medians, and highways.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, stated that the affected markets had consistently failed to manage waste appropriately, leading to the enforcement action.

The market closures, which took place on Thursday night, are part of the state’s ongoing efforts to ensure environmental cleanliness and safeguard public health.

Wahab emphasized that such measures are crucial to restoring order in public spaces and maintaining a healthier environment for all Lagosians. He also stressed that market stakeholders must now take full responsibility for proper waste management moving forward.

The markets affected by the closures include Erukan Market in Mile 12, Oja Oba Market in Ketu, and Owoseni Tundas Market. Other sealed locations are Oba Ogunjobi Market, Shops Owners at the BRT Terminal in Mile 12, and Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops. Ketu Terminal Market, which consists of six plazas, along with Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market in Mile 12, Demurin St Plaza Shops, and Ifelodun Market in Ketu, were also affected. Additionally, Ibadan Unit 1 Park, located between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market, as well as Ketu Tipper Garage, were sealed.

The commissioner concluded by urging all Lagosians to work together to create a cleaner, safer, and more responsible city.
