Fir£ Razes 12 Shops in Ibadan Market, Traders Lose Millions of Naira
A fir£ outbreak on Thursday devastated a section of the Agodi Mayegun Cement Store Market in Ibadan, d+stroying at least 12 shops and property worth millions of naira.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident on Friday, noting that a distress call was received from a resident identified as Mr. Young. Firefighters were immediately dispatched and were able to stop the blaze from spreading to other parts of the market.
Akinyinka said the swift response saved property worth billions of naira, and he attributed the likely cause of the fir£ to a power surge.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started at Block A, No. 64 and raged for over three hours before it was brought under control. While no injuries or fatalities were recorded, the destruction has left many traders counting heavy losses.
The incident has renewed calls for improved electrical safety and better fire prevention systems within the market.
