Lagos Assembly in Chaos as Ousted Speaker Obasa Storms Complex
Confusion erupted at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday as removed Speaker Mudashiru Obasa arrived, allegedly attempting to reclaim his position.
Obasa, accompanied by armed police and civil defense personnel, entered the complex around 11:30 AM, causing tension. With Speaker Mojisola Meranda absent, only two lawmakers—Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin II)—were seen with him. Reports indicate that Obasa’s loyalists forcibly opened the Speaker’s office, while suspected supporters blocked roads leading to the Assembly.
Despite the House being on recess, this dramatic development comes after the Inspector General of Police withdrew all security personnel assigned to Speaker Meranda, leaving her vulnerable. An aide to Meranda confirmed the withdrawal, urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene to prevent further unrest.
Meanwhile, the crisis deepened on Wednesday when suspended Clerk Olalekan Onafeko attempted to resume duty. He arrived with his lawyer and security officers but was turned away by Assembly security, who cited ongoing legal proceedings. A viral video showed staff jeering as he exited.
The Assembly’s leadership dispute stems from Obasa’s January 13 removal by 32 out of 40 lawmakers, leading to Meranda’s election as Speaker. Despite interventions from President Bola Tinubu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Governor Sanwo-Olu, and the APC, no resolution has been reached.
With rising tensions, stakeholders are urging swift action to restore order and ensure the Assembly’s stability.
