Muhsin Hendricks, ‘first openly gay Imam’ and  a well-known religious leader and advocate for marginalized communities, has tr+gically l+st his life in South Africa.

The 57-year-old cleric, who led Masjidul Ghurbaah in Cape Town—a space known for its inclusivity—was fatally att+cked on Saturday morning near Gqeberha.

Authorities report that two unidentified individuals ambushed his vehicle and opened fir£ before fleeing the scene. Investigations are ongoing, with concerns that the att+ck may have been a targeted crime.

Hendricks was widely respected for his efforts in fostering dialogue and supporting individuals in reconciling their faith and identity.
