IGP Egbetokun Bans Officers in Mufti from Carrying Rifles
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strict directive prohibiting police officers from carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).
Speaking during a virtual meeting with police managers on Monday, the IGP emphasized the need for professionalism and respect for human rights. His statement, conveyed by Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, warned officers against rights violations and misconduct.
“I have received multiple complaints through the Force’s complaint channels regarding rights violations,” the IGP stated. “Such misconduct will not be tolerated and will attract severe consequences.”
He also cautioned all tactical squads against abuse of power and improper dressing, stressing that officers must operate strictly in their approved uniforms.
“All tactical squads must adhere to the standard operating procedures and wear the designated uniforms assigned to their respective units,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the IGP condemned the unauthorized transfer of cases without written approval, describing it as a prohibited act that places unnecessary burdens on the parties involved and delays justice.
