FG Allocates ₦100bn for Solar Power in UCH, UniLag, others

The Federal Government has earmarked ₦100 billion in the proposed 2025 budget to provide solar mini-grids for selected federal universities, teaching hospitals, and other government institutions.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, aims to deliver cost-effective, reliable, and eco-friendly power solutions to public institutions.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu confirmed that once the budget is passed and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, implementation will begin immediately.

“This is a new concept designed to reduce the cost of governance. We will use the ₦100 billion allocation to solarise public institutions across the country,” Aliyu stated.

The move follows a government analysis of the high costs incurred by public institutions on diesel and generator-powered electricity, prompting a shift towards sustainable solar energy.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over power shortages in federal institutions. On Monday, University of Ibadan students protested a 100-day blackout at the University College Hospital (UCH). In response, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu assured students that electricity would soon be restored, with the REA confirming that solar mini-grids would be deployed at UCH and four other institutions nationwide.

“Within the next six months, I will have begun deploying solar mini-grids in five more universities, completing at least two of the eight mini-grids planned for universities and one teaching hospital,” Aliyu revealed.

The initiative also extends to key government parastatals in Abuja and beyond, signaling a broader push towards renewable energy adoption in Nigeria’s public sector.
