A disturbing incident of ATM card swapping was caught on CCTV in Anambra State, where a young woman exploited an elderly, visually impaired widow by swapping her ATM card and emptying her account within minutes.
The event took place at an ATM in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area. The elderly woman was attempting to withdraw cash but faced difficulties operating the machine due to her visual impairment.
A bystander, dressed in a red top and black trousers, offered to help the widow. However, she deceitfully swapped the widow’s ATM card with a fake, expired card after obtaining the PIN. The scammer then left the scene, leaving the widow unaware of the switch.
Shortly after, the widow began receiving debit alerts indicating that her account had been drained. A 42-second CCTV clip of the incident has been widely shared on social media, confirming the events.
Eyewitnesses emphasized the importance of vigilance and caution when using ATMs, particularly for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with disabilities.
