More woes for Emefiele as he faces fresh fra¥d charges

The federal government will today, Friday, January 18, 2024, arraign the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on an amended 20-count Charge.

The amended charges dated January 17, 2024, were filed by counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo and three others on behalf of the attorney-general of the federation (AGF).

In August 2023, the government filed a six-count charge of alleged fra¥dul£nt procurement against the former CBN governor.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu on November 22, 2023.

EFCC prosecutor (Oyedepo) confirmed the fresh arraignment billed for today before Justice Muazu.

The amended charge contains new counts relating to fra¥dul£nt award of contracts to Emefiele’s wife, Omoile Margret, his brother-in-law, Omoile Macombo and other associates.

The amended charge includes counts of conspiracy to commit forg£ry, conferring a corr¥pt advantage, criminal breach of trust among others.

Yesterday, the court approved Emefiele’s request to travel out of Abuja.
The court, however, specified that Emefiele must stay within the country, adhering to the bail terms that restrict his movements to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
