Most people complaining about the increase in cost of tuition spend over N190,250 on phones — Reno Omokri

He weighed in on the ongoing debates and responses surrounding the increase in the University of Lagos’ (UNILAG) tuition fees.

The management of UNILAG raised the institution’s undergraduate tuition costs from N19, 000 to over N 190,000 as a result of this increase.

The management of the institution has set new tuition at N190,250 for students studying medicine, and N140,250 for courses requiring lab and studio work, according to a statement made public by the UNILAG section of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SANU) on July 20, 2023, following a meeting with senior management. The institution’s students previously paid N19,000, but the new tuition is N190,250.

He said Nigerians are complaining about the increase in Unilag’s tuition fees from N19,000 to N190,250. Many of those people complaining use phones that cost more than M190,250. How much is an iPhone 14? About #1.2 million. How much is a Samsung Galaxy? About N300,000. How can an iPhone and a Samsung cost more than your tuition, and you are complaining? Where will the money to pay lecturers come from? In that same Unilag, many students drive more luxurious cars and use better phones than their lecturers.

In Nigeria, we are just too used to freebies and cheap things from our government. We have one of the lowest tuition fees on planet Earth, if not the lowest, yet, our doctors and nurses are some of the most sought after on Earth.

Please fact check me. Average tuition fees at Nigerian public universities = #50,000 or $65. Average tuition fees at Ghanaian public universities = GHS17,145 or $1503. Average tuition fees at British public universities =£9,250 or $11,900. Average tuition fees at European public universities = €10,000 or
$11,128. Average tuition fees at American public universities = $10,400. Yet, you are here saying ‘Nigeria is finished’, ‘Nigeria is u§eless’ because of an increase of tuition fees from N19,000 to #190,250
at one university?

Ghana has a minimum wage of GHS446, or $40 per month. Yet, Ghanaians pay twenty five times what we pay in tuition. Do Ghanaians earn twenty five times what Nigerians earn in minimum wage? Is fuel cheaper in Ghana than in Nigeria? I was in Ghana two months ago. Believe me when I say that you would fare better economically in Nigeria than in Ghana. Is Nigeria as wealthy as the UK, US, and the EU? Nigeria is not such a bad country. If you think the cost of education is too high, then try the cost of illiteracy!
