78 confirmed d£ad, hundreds missing as migrant boat capsiz£s in Greece

At least 78 people have di£d and more than 100 have been rescued after their migrant boat sank off southern Greece.

The boat was traveling from the coastal city of Tobruk in Libya to Italy when it capsized off the coast of Greece earlier this week.

More than 500 passengers are thought to be missing, in one of the worst losses of life recorded in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Hellenic Coastguard rescued 104 and collected 78 bodies from the Ionian Sea 47 nautical miles (87km) off Pylos, but survivors say as many as 750 people may have been packed on to the boat including about 100 children.

Greece says it is one of its biggest ever migrant tragedies, and has declared three days of mourning.
