It was done to boost the economy — Pres. Buhari says, as he apologizes to Nigerians over the Naira redesign policy

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday stated that the naira redesign policy was meant to boost the economy and not to cause hardship.

Buhari who spoke in Hausa, apologized to Nigerians over the development in a video clip posted on Twitter by Uba Sani on Thursday.

He said; “I apologise to you for the hardship caused by the change of the naira. It was done to boost the economy of the country, not to cause hardship to anybody.

First of all, I want to once again thank you for the confidence you have in me by electing me president on the platform of our party, the APC.”

It would be recalled that in October 2022, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, announced the plan to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

The apex bank also said February 10 would be the deadline for the use of old naira notes and that resulted in a scarcity of the currency.
