A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered for the immediate release of former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Kuje, Abuja.
Kalu was sentenced to 12 years in prison last December for looting N7.65billion belonging to Abia State. But on Friday, May 8, the Supreme Court nullified the conviction, stating that the Federal High Court in Lagos acted without jurisdiction when it convicted Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu.
On Tuesday, May 12, Kalu, through his counsel Lateef Fagbemi filed an application before the Federal High Court in Lagos seeking his immediate release from the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Justice Mohammad Liman granted the lawmaker’s application today, June 2.
