Ebi Tosan, 20, one of the 4 suspects arrested in connection with the robbery of the Lekki branch of First City Monument Bank in March, has sued the police, seeking damages in the sum of N1m. His lawyer, Chief S.W. Baidi, argued that his
client’s continued detention without bail was an infringement and curtailment of his constitutional right to personal liberty, freedom of movement and presumption of innocence.

He is seeking a declaration that his arrest, torture and continued detention by the State Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, without bail, was a violation of his human rights, preserved by sections 34(1)(a), 35(1)(4) and Section 41 of the 1999 constitution. His uncle, Tamuno Amos, believes that Ebi’s continued detention is a deliberate act to extract a confessional statement from him.

Tamuno said he hasn’t been allowed to see Ebi and claims he is suffering on a daily basis without access to food, bath and other conveniences and he may die in custody unless granted bail. Ebi, arrested in April, had secured an order of Justice Lateefa Okunnu, directing the police to produce him in court yesterday but the police did not bring him to court and his originating summons slated for hearing could not be heard. Okunnu then adjourned hearing of the application till October 22….. ppl r beginning to question d criteria d USA used in ranking Nigeria Police Force as d best in world…..
