On the 11th of March, 2016, an Ebutte-metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, presided over by Chief Magistrate Folashade Botoku, ordered the remand of the MG of Lekki Gardens, Richard Nyong, owner of the five Storey building that collapsed in Lekki, killing about 35 people.
The remand order of the court was premised on an ex-parte application brought before the court by the Officer-in-Charge of Legal Department of Police, Mr. Eno-Edobor Thomas, a Chief Superintendent of Police, urging the court to remand Nyong till the police concludes its investigation.
Chief Magistrate Botoku upheld the application of the prosecution, and ordered that Nyong be remanded at State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Panti-Yaba, for the first 30 days. She subsequently adjourned the matter till April 12, 2016. However, a staff of Lekki Gardens is claiming Nyong has been set free by the Governor.
