A 37-year-old pharmacist who strangled his wife so he could start a new life with his boyfriend, has been jailed for at least 30 years.
Patel injected his wife, Jessica, 34, with insulin before strangling her with a Tesco bag at their Middlesbrough home – an attack he had plotted for years.
He then staged a break-in to make it look like she had been killed by an intruder and intended to move to Australia with a £2m life insurance payout.
In what is thought to be a legal first, detectives used the iPhone health app to view the movements of Patel and his wife which exposed his lies.
Following a trial at Teesside Crown Court, Patel was found guilty of murder and sentenced on Wednesday.
